Palliative Care Guidelines was published for the first time in 2001. A list of topics and potential contributors was proposed by Associate Professor Geoff Mitchell, senior lecturer in general practice and palliative care at The University of Queensland.

He has contributed to all four versions of Palliative Care Guidelines, as has Associate Professor Will Cairns, well known in Queensland for his expertise in palliative medicine. Professor Peter Ravenscroft, in charge of palliative care at Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle, chaired two editions of Palliative Care Guidelines, and has also served on the writing groups for all four editions.

The second edition was published in 2005, the third in 2010, and the fourth in 2016.

By 2017, Palliative Care Guidelines was on TGL’s list of top three bestseller printed books.

Two special TGL publications have drawn on excellent doctoral theses.

Understanding, influencing and evaluating drug use, first published in 2001, consisted of three chapters from TGL staff member Jonathan Dartnell’s doctoral thesis. The publication in 2004 of Health care and notions of risk, by Dr Richard Clark, was the second in this series.
