The first edition of Gastrointestinal Guidelines was published in 1994. Rob Moulds chaired the first edition, as well as three others. Board member Professor Don Birkett chaired the third edition in 2002. Professor Gillian Shenfield chaired the fourth edition in 2006.

Three of the original contributors to Gastrointestinal Guidelines formed the backbone of the group for its first four versions.

Dr Tony Catto-Smith from The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne offered expertise in gastroenterology and clinical nutrition, Associate Professor Brendan Crotty was dean of the clinical school of The University of Melbourne at the Austin Hospital, and Associate Professor Paul Desmond was director of St Vincent’s Hospital’s department of gastroenterology in Melbourne. They were joined for the second edition by Associate Professor Paul Pavli, from the Australian National University medical school and Canberra Hospital. He also contributed to four versions.

The first edition of Respiratory Guidelines was also published in 1994. It was chaired by Rob Moulds, who also chaired the fifth edition (2015). Dr Richard Ruffin, professor of medicine at The University of Adelaide, and Dr Graham Simpson, respiratory physician and director of a tuberculosis control unit at Cairns Base Hospital, each served on writing groups for four versions of Respiratory Guidelines. TGL board member John Dowden chaired expert groups of three editions.
